Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Barcelona (2013-2018)
The Urban Mobility Plan of Barcelona 2013-2018 attempts to lay down guidelines in matters of mobility for the city of Barcelona in the coming years, with a clear focus on sustainability.
The principal objective of the Plan is to achieve the implementation of Superblocks with a level of traffic network saturation similar to the present. For this purpose, alternative transportation will be better implemented (new orthogonal bus and bicycle networks, carpool and pedestrian lanes, etc.), and restrictive measures will be placed on private vehicles, such as an increase in the price of metered parking.
Other secondary objectives will be the compliance with European regulatory parameters of environmental quality, a reduction in noise and number of accidents, and an increase in pedestrian road space.
Two additional scenarios are also planned: one that proposes a direction change on some of the main streets of Barcelona in order to obtain maximum efficiency from the road network, and another that has as its principal objective compliance with the OMS recommendations with respect to environmental quality (more strict than the European regulations).
The downward tendency that private vehicle mobility has experienced in recent years is an element that greatly helps the objectives of the Plan.
