Study for the application of urban sustainability indicators in Bilbao

Final evaluation

The document aims to provide a comprehensive description and evaluation of the current situation and trends in urban sustainability in the city of Bilbao. The methodology is based on indicators and addresses the major areas involved in achieving a sustainable city model from an ecosystem vision: land occupation, public space and habitability, mobility and services, urban complexity, urban metabolism, green spaces and urban biodiversity, and social cohesion.

The study uses 48 indicators to assess the current situation of Bilbao (2012) and two future scenarios: one tendential scenario and an improved scenario that involves an increase in the population, the integration of major urban regeneration projects and the implementation of various current projects.

Each indicator is accompanied by a sheet where the degree of urban sustainability, according to minimum and desirable parameters, is analyzed, at the urban level and in detail (neighborhoods).

The results of diagnosis are adequate (rating C-sufficient). The areas to be improved are: urban green spaces and biodiversity and social cohesion. The analysis of future scenarios will show the tendency of Bilbao for the coming years.
