SIMUR, the System of Information and Urban Modelling applied to Waste Management (Sistema de Información y Modelización Urbana aplicado a los Residuos) is a computer simulation for modeling and environmental assessment of management systems for municipal waste.

SIMUR is an innovative tool in the field of waste management to model and evaluate all phases of a waste management system. SIMUR provides information on the impacts of a municipality’s waste management and uses that information to suggest improvements. In other words, the program identifies, models, evaluates and optimizes waste management options.

The SIMUR interface is user friendly and flexible, with the ability to adapt to new technologies and management models. It can also incorporate default databases, consolidating common methodologies for evaluating management systems.

The software program includes tools for calculating mass balance, energy and emissions impacts (soil, water and air), indicators, and a cost analysis for each waste management scenario.

The Waste Agency of Catalonia (ARC) has applied SIMUR to test their first stage of waste management with the assistance of several municipalities in Catalonia: District Council Ribera d'Ebre and Conca de Barbera, Mancomunitat de l'Urgellet, Mataro and Sant Joan Despi Mancomunitat de la Plana. SIMUR was also used by LIPOR (waste management company of Porto, Portugal) through a specific collaboration agreement.

SIMUR provides information on the impacts of a municipality’s waste management and uses that information to suggest improvements.
