SIMUR Modelling of waste management systems in municipalities of Catalonia

SIMUR

This study was conducted by the Waste Management Program of Catalonia between 2007 and 2012. BCNecologia performed a comprehensive analysis by applying SIMUR (environmental assessment software and management modelling). The Agency used a wide range of variables related to municipal waste management models from 35 municipalities in Catalonia.

This study made comparisons between specific indicators to determine each system’s strengths and weaknesses. The comparisons also helped establish interrelationships between the various factors studied, from the results of modelling to urban and socio-economic characteristics of municipalities.

Two types of comparisons were used to obtain a more detailed performance management and impact assessment of each municipality.

The first comparison introduced the main indicators and sorted them according to population for each of the 35 municipalities. Next, the indicators were presented and discussed in clear and understandable tables and graphs. This comparison allowed the comparison of each case with other municipalities.

The second comparison used results from collection systems to find trends in terms of waste management by each municipality. Also, it determined correlations between indicators and urban or socio-economic factors. /p>
