Energy balance and emissions of the Barcelona bus network (3iBS)

Emissions of public transport (buses)
3iBS is a project designed to improve the performance, accessibility, and efficiency of urban bus systems. 3iBS is directly involved with the European Commission’s aim to develop a high quality public transport and has pledged to improve the image of the buses in the urban environment. 3iBS wants to keep the research activities, develop research for bus system, exploit and implementing key solutions, promote the dissemination and exchange of knowledge at the global level.

The permanent objective of 3iBS is positive strengthening of the position of the industry of buses in the EU, attainable through adaptation to specific needs. Strategy passes by strengthening competitiveness and creating a virtuous circle to stimulate the integration of the best results in public transportation bus systems.

This report has been prepared starting from the demands of workpackage no. 16 of the 3iBS project. TMB has presented the results of this workpackage, showing the improvements in pollutant emissions and energy aspects. These improvements are produced thanks to the renewal of the fleet of buses, where less polluting technologies Euro and the commitment with hybrid vehicles are being imposed for the first time.

The main purpose of this work package has been the proposal of efficiency and sustainability measures to reduce the consumption of energy and emissions. The study has focused on the combination of three fundamental parameters: the fleet, infrastructure, and operational management (type of network, commercial speed, etc).
