Development of the Municipal Waste Guide for the Management and Collection of Municipal Waste

Collection of organic waste

The management and collection of organic municipal waste is considered the backbone of waste management systems in our cities. Organic materials are the number one priority to reduce and dispose of properly, and their reduction can greatly improve the flows of waste generated by our urban centres. The most effective ways of reducing organic waste and prolonging the life of our landfills are for there to be roadside collection programs and individuals composting at home. These initiatives encourage citizen participation and are the keys to achieving a closed cycle system.

Organic waste is first collected and then sent to waste treatment facilities. The quality of roadside collection makes it easy to manage the materials in after-treatment plants and allows the organic waste to be composted and recovered to the highest degree. Self composting is also an effective way to deal with organic waste and the nutrient-rich soil can be used for many purposes such as agriculture and gardening.

The purpose of developing the Municipal Waste Guide is to present the direct and indirect benefits of municipal composting initiatives and suggestions for the proper management of organic waste. In addition, the Guide uses a hierarchy of waste management, in terms of priority of disposal and the relevant legislation. It includes a series of tips and recommendations to facilitate the program in municipalities, as well as management tools for the collection, treatment, and prevention of organic material waste.

Additionally, it includes case studies regarding the successful implementation of compost programs in other Spanish cities, as well as some outstanding examples from around Europe.
