Definition and calculation of indicators applied to the Urban Study of Plaza de Santa Bárbara

Plaza de Santa Bárbara

This project evaluated the sustainable nature of the Plaza de Santa Barbara in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The evaluation was based on indicators analyzing its Ecosystemic Urbanism, and its degree of accommodation to the model of the sustainable city. The selection of indicators was consistent with the Plan of Urban Sustainability Indicators in Vitoria-Gasteiz (2009). This plan introduced a comprehensive way to measure construction and rehabilitation processes within cities using sustainability criteria.

The proposal suggested that the management of public space in both the Santa Barbara Square and the Market Square be recovered, and reinforced with sustainable actions. This was to provide consistency and citizen value through a complete remodeling of the Plaza, extending routes that converged in the area. This area not only related to the Plaza’s immediate surroundings, but it was defined as a transition point between the medieval quarter and its extension. This made the Plaza a key point that could positively influence the daily lives of these surrounding areas.

The evaluation of the proposal revealed a substantial improvement in the public space and residential apartments in terms of energy efficiency. The mobility of the area was also improved through the introduction of a pattern of superblocks.

The selection of indicators was consistent with the Plan of Urban Sustainability Indicators in Vitoria-Gasteiz (2009).
