Action Plan for Air Quality Improvement in Sta. Coloma de Gramenet (2008-2015)

Air quality measurement point of Sta. Coloma de Gramenet

The municipality of Santa Coloma de Gramenet belongs to the Special Protection Zone of the atmospheric environment from NO2 and PM10. Since Santa Coloma is a city with more than 100.000 people and has exceeded pollution levels, a plan must be developed for the compliance with and improvement towards air quality objectives. This work analyzes the air quality of the city via an inventory of emissions from various sources and the summary of air quality data from measurement points and previous campaigns in the municipality.

The last few years (2009-2012) the measurement point of NOx in Santa Coloma registered concentration level values over the legislated limit to protect human health (40 µg/m3). The inventory of emissions shows that private car is the main source of emissions of NOx  (73,0%) and PM10 (72,5%). From these emissions, 50% of NOx and 54% of PM10 are produced on B-20 highway which fall outside of the local government's jurisdiction.

An Action Plan has been proposed for the Improvement of Air Quality (PAMQA), consisting of 41 actions. Because traffic is the main contributor to air pollution, 61% of the actions are directed towards this sector. It has been estimated that the implementation of all of these actions will cause a reduction of 12% NOx and 13% PM10 emissions within the city compared to 2008.
