INDICATORS OF MANAGEMENT AND GOVERNANCE

Today’s urban systems, for the most part, are unsustainable, even though we possess the knowledge and technologies necessary to reverse the situation. This is largely due to the lack of policies and regulations promoting ecological efficiency, and the blatant disregard by city officials. In order to direct our cities toward a process of sustainability, policies must be set by those in charge. However, in the absence of cooperation among management and governing bodies, we do not have the adequate resources to induce change.

BCNecologia incorporates the indicators of management and governance into Urban Ecology, an aspect generally ignored by current urban systems. The new targets will force us to change the management mechanisms and regulations in order to achieve sustainability goals.

To drive the processes of sustainability, it is necessary to promote training, transparency in administration, and citizen participation among city management and governing bodies. It would be desirable if city officials could work in partnership with administration and urban planners through each stage of development, from the initial urban planning phases, to construction and finally to the implementation of ecologically friendly infrastructures and policies.
